Good places for primitive camping in Southern California.

Where are some good places to go camping in Southern California?

  • I'm looking for some places to camp this winter break. Ideally, it would have a lot of backpacking routes and a lot of trees. Trees are a must!

Go north along the coast, very little chance of problems with snow. Try the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada stay below 4,000 feet and snow won't be a problem. The Bishop area, east side of the mountains, is very cold this time of year because of it's higher elevation. On the western side there ia a zone around the 3,000 foot level that experiences an inversion effect and is often warmer that the valley.

Sequoia, Inyo, Sierra, Stanislaus National Forests. Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail goes through the area. Mount Whitney is a great destination. You will be limited by snow. Remember the Donner Party!
