Dos & Donts: keep a clean camp, be considerate of neighbors for noise, never leave a fire unattended, and move cautiously whenever around it, no running through camp. The REI camp checklist is so that you won't forget anything and is likely not to all fit into an RV; their day hike list is more realistic. Here's a gear list and some survival tips, typically don't have to have a GPS have one complete change of clothes, one long sleeved shirt and long pants for sun, bugs, brush warm hat, rain/sun hat, leather gloves, wool gloves, long sleeve middle warm layer light-weight rain gear, top & bottom, acts wind block and warm at night, space blanket or bag 3'x3' cotton bandana, metal cup and bottle, expandable larger water bottle 50gal bags, zip-lock freezer gal & quart size; stuff clothes and gear in them, good for floatation and to carry more water when needed, water will typically purify in them in six hours direct sun light http://www.backpacker.com/dayhiking_gear_checklist/gear/12097 http://www.backpacker.com/survival/ Survival shows are good to watch, lots on youtube; Dave Canterbury, Dual Survival, Man Woman Wild For cooking, one med pot and lid, one large spoon for eating, maybe one larger for cooking, leather gloves work for pot holders. Filter and boil water for drinking. Paper towels. Take fruit that is not easily bruised, like apples, some dried fruit if you like, raisins go in oatmeal if you want a hot breakfast. Otherwise, snack on a muffin and some raw nuts, almonds, sunflower seeds. Canned goods are easy, fruit peaches, apple sauce are a couple I like. Any canned food can be heated up by the edge of the fire, remember the leather gloves or a pair of pliers, and a can opener, leave an inch unopened for a decent handle. I like chili, stew, soups, or ravioli. Top Ramen is easy to fix, and can be eaten dry with or without the packet. If you have an ice chest, then veggies and maybe some cheese: carrots, cherry tomatoes, snow peas, whatever you like raw. Bring a knife to slice the cheese. Breads easily keep a week or two. You can bring pickles and cucumbers to make the sandwiches more interesting, and a favorite mustard. The simplest I've done is to pre-make cheese sandwiches without mayo, and peanut butter & honey mixed--these easily keep for a weekend. Flip flops and towel and soap for showering or sponge baths, little mirror and comb. I also bring a good book, a deck of cards, and a sketch pad. Have fun!

"This weekend" meaning today or next weekend? You failed to say how old your kids are. That makes a big difference. Why do askers never provide sufficient information?! Like where will the camping occur would be a nice thing to know in order to answer intelligently. Desert, woodlands, elevation? Start here: Teach your kids how to use a compass.

Do: Bring more warm clothes than you think you need. Bring condiments, spices, sugar, etc. Go over a few lists of what else you might want to bring. But if you forget something, that's okay, because you can turn it in to a camping challenge! Figure out how to survive without X. (This is a big part of the fun IMO... forgot camping chairs? Scour the campground for perfect logs and figure out how to transport them back to camp!) Don't: Leave food out, or animals will get it! Set up your tent in an indentation. If it rains you'll be sleeping in a puddle. ... That's all I can think of for now!

Healthy food is a priority. Instant brown rice and Bear Creek chili are a couple of quick-cooking items. Chop peppers, onion, bok choy, fresh pod peas, water chestnuts, and mushrooms for either scrambled eggs or stir-fry. Egg whites in a carton with cheese make great scrambled eggs. Egg whites poured into pancake flour with a little water and oil make pancakes topped with syrup or blueberry pie filling. Chopped vegetables with any meat bits in East-West Ginger Terriyaki make a great stir-fry to pour over a bed of brown rice.
