Wherever you choose (I recommend finding a designated wilderness area in a National Forest near you), make sure you keep it that way for future visitors by following leave-no-trace principles. These are a set of simple, common-sense rules to minimize your impact on these precious areas which are becoming much more rare these days. The rules include: carry out ALL garbage, don't contaminate the streams (urinate and defecate at least 200 feet away), don't feed the animals, don't take anything, consider not lighting a camp-fire (they are appropriate in some places but in others they greatly scar the landscape), travel and camp only on the most durable surfaces you can find, and make sure you bury or carry out your poop. Remember, a great camp-site is found, not made. That includes fire-rings, wind-walls, tent pads, etc. Visit www.lnt.org for more information.

Camping is a great way to connect with family. There is a great app i use here in North Carolina called Pocket Ranger that helps you find the perfect state park to camp at since you can narrow down your choices by activities you would like. The pro version of this app is great for hiking too since you can GPS your location without needing cell service!
The Adirondack Mountains in norther NY. A 6 million acre park that could fit the five largest western parks in it and still leave a lot of room leftover. You can camp pretty much anywhere but are supposed to call the local ranger and tell him where you are. If you get lost it can take days to find you even if the rangers know where to start. This is a very heavily forested area with mountains and hundreds of lakes. Don't get caught on the west side (tug hill plateau) during a snow storm.

If I were you, I'd get on the Appalachian Trail that runs through VA (on of the nicest part of the trail IMO). While on the trail, keep looking for areas off trail that appeal to you. Once you see something, get off trail and start bushwhacking until you went far enough in to a place you like. Be sure to get a AT map to be sure you're not heading to close to other trails or civilization. Most areas along the AT are pretty safe to stealth camp (non official camp sites). If you ask someone, well then it's not going to be as private. You have to find your own. And definitely don't ask no park employees.

I cannot imagine that you contacted the National Forest Service and did not obtain the names of designated wilderness areas in the United States. The GS-05 employee at the Forest Service desk who makes $13 an hour for six months of the year without health benefits or retirement savings should be fired.
