How to break in Hiking boots?

  • I realized a week before my trip that I need hiking boots and I don;t have any so what are some that will break in fast or take no breaking in at all? Also what are some quick ways of ...show more

  • Answer:

I never bought a pair of hiking boots that needed "breaking-in." Wear two pair of socks at all times, starting with when you fit the boots and walk around the store when you are buying them. Timberland, $100, and The North Face, $160, are two brands in which I have hiked hundreds of miles. Waximum your boots if they are leather as soon as you take them out of the box. Keeping the leather saturated with silicone, mink oil, or other oil-based treatments will keep boots soft and protected. I buy my boots about a half-size big to fit a couple of pairs of socks to protect my feet from rocky trail abuse. Hauling a fifty-pound pack up thousands of vertical feet in boulder fields tends to give your feet a pounding.

Unless they are 100% leather uppers, which I recommend you avoid, hiking boots require no break-in. Most hiking boots are made of Goretex or other manmade materials that do not need to be broken-in to become supple. Just make sure they fit comfortably with no hot spots when you buy them, wearing the same type of socks you will wear on the trail. The best setup for socks is to wear a thin silk or synthetic liner under a thick wool or wool-blend hiking sock. The liner will allow your foot to move in the boot without chafing and help wick moisture out of the boot, while the wool hiking sock will provide cushioning. Walking around with wet socks will only make your feet smell and cause blisters, possibly fungus.

Get a quality pair of hiking boots from a store like REI made by a reputable brand like The North Face, Chaco, Asolo, La Sportiva, etc.. and they will not need breaking in.

Tim

just wear them to the mall and use the stairs a lot.

I suggest you put the hiking boots on. and walk a few miles in them , this afternoon, instead of being on YA.
