Southern California Camping Spots?

  • Answer:

Define "close by?" Our favorite spot that fits your criteria is up Hwy 178 past Lake Isabella. Continue past Kernville almost to Fairview-on-the-Kern & Road's End; the campground is called Chamise Flats, and is 1 mile short of Fairview. You have to carry your gear down a hill but the site is private, you have riverfront access within a few feet, and the sound of the roaring Kern and all it has to offer. There are other campgrounds in the area, a few more accessible, but none quite so special.

Definitely look into Big Bear. Great camping/weather/swimming/fishing. Town close by for shopping needs. Check out the site.

There are several places in the south section of Orange County. 1) Doheny Beach in Dana Point www.dohenystatebeach.org this is the most commercial of the 3 listed, it's near the mouth of Dana Point Harbor, easy walk to good restraurants, lots of boats to watch as while as surfers. 2) State of California Campground in San Clemente, 1 mile south of San Clemente www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=646 3) San Onofre Campground near the power plant www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=647 . All 3 are on the beach or cliffs above the beach with pathways to the beach. Reservations are required, they booked up in advance, especially for the weekends. Have fun, these are really nice adventures with great surfing in the area.

There are many great spots areound LA! My favorite is the Ojai area, one nice campground there is Wheeler's Gorge. That's in Ventura County, about 1 1/2 hours from LA. A nice river runs though it., with some swimming holes nearby. I also like Lake Piru, which is near Santa Clarita. It's a big lake with a nice campground & swimming & boating areas. They have a website if you google it. There are lots of nice spots in the Angeles Forest- 2 beautiful campgrounds are Buckhorn & Chilao. They are about 1 hour drive from LA. The Kern River is very nice too, but a little farther drive . Good luck !
