I assume you're taking a long trek into some remote area, and not driving up to a campsite or just hiking a mile or two off the road into a park. Though if you ARE doing the latter, er... just bring a couple bottles of water and a knife, maybe some matches. I don't have a "survival kit", but I also don't get lost and know what to do if i do. But some good things to have (I generally have a knife and lighter on me, anyway): * Knife * Flint and/or matches and/or a lighter with extra fluid and flint * Something to hold/boil water in (water purification tabs optional) * Extra water (optional if there are water sources where you'll be, important if not) * Knowledge of what plants you can eat and what plants you should stay away from Optional but good to have if you plan on being far from anyone who can help: * Anti-venom or treatment supplies for any venomous/poisonous animals that inhabit where you'll be, for humans and for whatever other species you'll have with you (ie: if you're bringing a dog) * Antibiotic ointment and/or pills (if you have them or can get them), same as above. * compass * Mirror (to use as a signal) If bringing a dog: dog food and/or something to catch food for them (fishing line, etc...).

Knife - almost essential, tent - if you are camping, flint - something to start a fire, water bottle - 100% NECESSARY, food - essential, tent equipment - things used to set up a tent ( sorry can't remember what each one is called), spare clothing - you may get wet XD, and depending on where you are going, some sort of defence. If you are going somewhere with bears, tigers etc. bring a weapon, something to protect you e.g a large knife / hunting knife or ( if you are qualified ) a pistol hope this helped!

It really depends on where you are going, and for how long you plan to be in the wilderness. Here are some basic things: -Knife -Matches & lighter -Rope -Fire starter -Water or a water purification system -Wool Blanket -Tarp or Plastic (if you are not bringing a tent) In addition to these items it is crucial to have necessary first-aid items. Adventure Medical Kits make some really great first-aid kits for camping. You can check them out here: http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/product.php?product=267. I would also recommend reading and bringing a good medical handbook with you just in case. I carry Elsevier's "Medicine for the Outdoors" by Paul S. Auerbach (http://www.us.elsevierhealth.com/Medicine/Emergency-Medicine/book/9780323068130/Medicine-for-the-Outdoors/) with me in my survival bag. This book will help you handle ANY possible medical emergency you may face in the wilderness. It is also important to remember to include any signaling items, such as a mirror or flares. Many people forget these items but they are crucial in emergency survival situations. Also, keep in mind, depending on where you are going and when, you need to remember the most important thing in a survival situation is to keep your body dry and warm. Include any extra items you may need if you know you'll be dealing with rain and moisture. Good luck!
