Where is the best/top rated places (national forests) for rafting, camping, hiking,....in the United States?

I would avoid the popular National Parks in the summer. I live close to Yosemite and that place is way to over crowded. I would recommend the Cedar Grove area in Kings Canyon National Park. There are a few waterfalls, one just a few minutes walk from the parking area off the highway. You can fish the Kings River. There are plenty of spots along the river with no one around. Cedar Grove has several campgrounds. All are first come, first serve. I've never been up there when the campgrounds have been full. You can also do the Boyden Cavern tour just about a 20 minute drive from the Cedar Grove campgrounds. It's a very interesting cave, with odd formations. Another area worth checking out is Sierra National Forest. It's between Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. I've stayed in both Lake Tahoe and camped/cabined at Yosemite-both are gorgeous but very popular. I'd suggest trying to go slightly off-season if possible, to avoid the crowds. I stayed at a fancy resort in Tahoe on the lake for a conference, and hiked every where I could. Yosemite is popular in the valley, but once you go up and away there's not the crowds-I stayed outside the park since it was quieter. Lots of waterfalls in the valley, streams, but lots of people, unless you try to go off-season. I didn't fish, just hiked and camped. This sounds like a better fit for what you want. Have fun!

The Bankhead National Forest near Double Springs Alabama has the Sipsey Wilderness Area. It's 25,000 acres of hiking trails and camping areas with a lot of waterfalls and such. It is a somewhat popular place but if you go during weekdays you will be less likely to encounter others. I hear the Sipsey River is good for canoeing,floating and rafting if water level is up. It's been very dry here in Alabama so far this year so not sure what it would be like.
