Bear Mt is a good bet if you go backpacking on the Appalachian Trail car camping is less of a wildness experience. Long Island has a few good camping spots close to the city.Fire Island National Seashore has a nice boat in camp ground very hard reservation to get! Or take the drive to dacks for real wildnesss.

Is Connecticut close enough? There are several state parks in CT that have camping. Not remote, but not bad for being an hour out of NYC.

Put New York City Campgrounds in your search box. It will bring up a list of them all with all kinds of info including maps, directions, etc. No doubt there are some in or near a wilderness area.

Try Liberty Harbor RV park in New Jersey. http://www.libertyharborrv.com/ Not a lot of "wilderness", but it is the closest campground to NYC that I know of. Have fun!
