  • Answer:

I just did a month and 2 week long road trip and didnt stay in a hotel once. We slept in the car in Walmart parking lots and rest stops. Both have security that drives/walks around. Plus both are LEGAL to sleep in your car. If you just pitch a tent anywhere you can be fined by the police for trespassing and loitering, which they love to do in small towns since tickets is a major income for the town/village. Also, if it rains you have to dry out your tent to prevent mildew and mold. Even if it doesnt rain the dew/ frost is enough to ruin a tent if it was put away wet. Nearly all land in Britain is owned by some-one, so it is legally trespass. Asking permission relieves you of this. Not all farmers are 'get orf me land' folk. Police will only get involved if the owner makes a complaint. I did the same thing many times in my youth and if you're discreet and leave nothing behind (don't light fires, leave rubbish, always bury your poo etc) - look out for animal activity in the field as, for example, if it's a dairy farm the cows will be out in the field at daybreak. There is still some 'common land' that's often indicated on OS maps and you're free to use that. Trying to understand the area is good practice.

I wouldn't worry a bit about animals attacking you. As for keeping the cops away, just talk to the landowner. Say: "hey--I'm on tour and pretty broke, would it be OK if I set up over in the corner of your field? I cook on a stove so I won't have a fire, and if you give me your address I'll send you a letter telling my vacation adventures when I get home." You did not provide details concerning your location and intended destinations. Many communities provide free camping spots for drive-through set-ups. Wilderness areas and forests allow dispersed camping away from developed roads, trails, waterways, and campgrounds. Inquire with local forest rangers, police officers, and visitor information centers. Make internet inquiries in advance of your travels to offices regulating parks, lands, and forests. Driving across the nation, I have "crashed" for a few hours in my vehicle at many waysides and was never bothered by law enforcement officials. Better to "crash" in a rest area than crash in a ditch from sleeping at the wheel.

I'm not familiar with England, but in the US, you can camp for free in most national forests. In national parks you usually have to pay, but if you get in late and leave early you can avoid the rangers; I've done it many times. I once camped under a tree in front of a church in Wyoming because I didn't want to risk waking up late and missing mass. I've also camped on a golf course in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
