Do you know any good camping spots in northern California?

Where are some great camping spots in Northern California?

  • I want to find some great camp spots no further than 2hrs give or take 30 min. from Oakland, Ca. preferably no places with bears or mountain lions, I've heard too many stories ...show more

  • Answer:

Lake Shasta, only thing it be about 3 hrs from Oakland. But be well worth the trip ;)... I've been up there and it is preeety beautiful! Might add the son-in-law is a professional hunting and fishin' guide (his specialty is black bears), outta' Redding CA., and the likes of ya' runnin' inta' bears there are HIGHLY unlikely :)!!!! The only wildlife I see are Black Tailed Deer and Bald Eagles, almost forgot aLot of fish!! Check out the link I've provided you... http://www.shastalake.com

Then don't go camping in northern Cali.

Go to the coast, west of Santa Rosa. There are a lot of cool places near the Russian River. The chances of dealing with bears and mountain lions are too remote to ruin a great weekend of camping. Stop worrying about it.

Again probably a little farther than you want to go . . . Lake Shasta is absolutely beautiful. Went houseboating for a week there last summer and it is awesome. You can hike Mt. Shasta as well . . . a snow capped dormant volcano. Plus Lake Shast is awesome for swimming.

For car camping, my favorite spot is Standish Hickey State Park, about 2 to 2-1/2 hours north of San Francisco. It's on the Eel River and has a great swimming hole not far from the campground. It's also just at the beginning of the redwood groves so you can head a little farther north and check out the Avenue of the Giants, or head out to the Lost Coast for more hiking. There's another great swimming hole nearby at Benbow State Park. It's usually pretty hot in the summer and has some great swimming if that's what you're into. Closer to home, if you're into backpacking, check out the backcountry campgrounds in the Point Reyes National Seashore (do a Google seach for their website). There are hundreds of miles of trails and great beaches, etc. It's my favorite place to go on the weekends (I live in the north bay).

If you were willing to to drive up above Eureka ( It's a good distance from oakland), there are a number of state parks in the area. We camped at Patrick's Point park. We then dove a little north of there and went to the redwood forest (where they filmed some for star wars). There is a great path there that take you to Fern Canyon, and absolutely gorgeous place. If you can afford to go up that far north, then do it, and enjoy.

i would reccomend mount Rainier, its farther than what you are thinking, but over the summer, it would make for a great vacation. contact Ranier Mountaineering Inc. for some information. they are run by Lou Whitaker, a highly respected person in the outdoor world. Mount Rainier would be a grat experiance, and as a side note, you would get one of the greatest feelings of accomplishment from climbing it
