How do I get into recreational dirt biking?

I want to get into dirt biking but don't really know where to start. I would intend on riding off-road just recreationally, not necessarily to compete. I've always wanted to ...show more

First of all you need a bike. You can have a racing bike even if you aren't racing. They have more power and are very light. I would reccomend a CRF150F, CRF150R, TTR125L, DRZ125. Judging by your name I see you are a girl so the CRF150R might be a bit much for a first timer. If you are into eoing fast you might think about 85/150R or maybe even a 125. I am 5'3 and I have a CRF250R and I have been riding one year. Motocross bikes are hard to learn on because they wheelie and take off fast. Bikes are difficult to rent, so you could go down to a HARDPACK track. Its has hard dirt so easy to ride on and you won't get bogged. Most people will let you try their bikes, but 99% of them will be motocross bikes. After you have chosen your bike, you have to reseach where you can ride. Anywhere away from houses that isn't protected you can usually ride on. If the area is strict about sound you might need to get a quiet exhaust. Riding a bike is the same as a manual car, clutch brakes, throttle. It is NOT like a bicycle, brakes are in different places etc. The right side is just simple go and stop. The left side is transmission. AKA slow down speed up, power output. I wouldn't reccommend racing until you have ridden for at least 8 months. And never buy a old bike, they are heavier and less reliable. Enjoy

Welcome to the club! Look for off road forums, specifically trail riding. There are clubs located everywhere that will give you information you need like ride dates and places to ride. Also, dirt bikers for the most are an eager bunch. I bought an older bike several years ago and was stuck with not sure where to ride. I found a website in my area and behold there are no less than 10 clubs in the state that catered to riding areas. KTM motorcycles has ride days where it is possible to test ride new bikes. My suggestion is to get on a local forum and give them the same question you asked here. Not only is it a good source of information but also classifieds for used bikes. Look at the links below and it will give you an Idea of what you'll be looking for...You'll love it!
