Can you start a kick start pit bike without a shift lever/kickstart?

A kick start lever and a shift lever are two different things. A kick start lever when kicked, turns the engine over. A shift lever, changes the gears in the transmission. If you do not have a kick start lever, you can push or bump start it. If you do not have a shift lever, you will not be able to put the bike in gear or put it into neutral. It will take a lot of torque to move a kick start shaft or a gear shift shaft. In other words you would not be able to do it with just your fingers. So, you can start a bike without a kick start lever. You can start a bike without a gear shift lever. It would be very difficult to start a bike without a kick start lever and a gear shift lever.

I'm sure a kickstart can't be that hard to get hold of, im sure any kickstart would do. Or you could bump start it, turn the back wheel to start it or you could get some starter rollers.

Why would you even think of buying a bike with either or both levers missing. That should tell you it hasn't been looked after or the owner doesn't want a test ride, probably because you will find more faults. I would want him to fit the missing lever before you look the bike over, then if you buy it you may want to pay for the lever; about $20. It sounds very weird that someone would want to sell a bike like that -- be careful....
