  I would recommend Pokemon Emerald since it can be bought on Ebay.com for less than $12 including shipping right now. The problem with trying out the Gameboy Advance series of Pokemon games is that the screens are so small, even on the Nintendo DS. You get just one screen and you will be flipping menus a lot compared to the more modern DS versions of the game. I think Pokemon HeartGold DS was the best of the series so far for Nintendo's portable gaming console. Pokemon HeartGold DS has an easier menu interface along with the largest Pokedex so far in the series. You will get a Pokewalker with it as well. The Pokewalker is real fun to use because it allows you to collect more Pokemon and items when you cannot pull out your Nintendo DS. Good luck with your choice, you should really like playing these games.
