As has been already said, the Orange Box. Half Life 2 and the Episodes are simply superb, TF2 is fantastic for multiplayer, and Portal is...Portal. Beyond that, try the Total War series if you're into strategy, Oblivion if you're into hack'n'slash fantasy (and especially look for mods online), or Evil Genius if you fancy yourself as one.

portal and Half life 2 Buy the orange box and you will spend close to 5 days trying to do everything. Portal is brilliant but WAY to short(19 levels) Half life 2 + 1 + 2 takes like 3 days to beat. so if you get the orange box its super fun. AND if you have Garrys Mod you can screw around for hours on end making stuff do funny things BTW im not coping him fo a free answer. i Love Portal and i hear Portal 2 is coming in JANUARY

Ive nto bought a PC game for a while (last purchase was Crysis) but if you want a cheap boredom buster try audiosurf, basically its a cross between wipout, tetris and a WMP visualization. all you need is soem music to paly it with, beware its addictive you cna spend hours trying to find "the perfect song" (when you get itno youll know what i mean)
