Try Star Wars Galactic Battleground. It literally is a sci-fi version of Age of Empires. Command & Conquer is also a good series to go with. Rise of Nations, Age of Mythology. You might even consider the new game World in Conflict.

You like historical RTS games. Many new RTS games are about futuristic inter-galactic wars, or WWII. But Medieval: Total War is an exception. Its not 07, maybe before 06, but its not old either (well, at least not as old as Age of Kings).

Well you could get Rome Total War at the bargain bin. If you liked that you could go and spend more money on Medieval Total War( I agree a great game ). Have you ever heard of the Civilization series? Or 1701 A.D. Go to the PC Gamer website and read some reviews. Added Later: Medieval Total War 2 came out about 10 months ago. there is also an earlier version.
