The same thing happened with me. It took me like 20mins to find a name. It means that the name is already taken. There are thousands of people all over the world that have ps3 online which makes it hard to find a name. Put a number at the end of it or put in things like (!@#$%) or somthing. what i do is take a word and mix some of the letters around for example my account name Spartan_solider send me an friend invtie when you get setup ps dont use simple names

Try the username you want, but add something else to it, like your birthdate or something. Try spelling it a little bit different and you should eventually find something.

Try a really creative nickname that worked in other sites. Mine's Toastrules and it's worked for every site and game i've done (except World of Warcraft). If u want an actual suggestion, try you're username here (Questionable, Confusionable, Unseeable) or something cool like that EDIT: I"m more of the type who does not like numbers in his name, i like originality alot more
