How Can I Know For Sure That My Guinea Pig is Pregnant?

How can you tell between a boy & a girl guinea pig? my guinea pig's vet says he doesn't know.?

  • he was in a cage with another guinea pig when i first got him. they didn't say wether it was a boy or a girl.

  • Answer:

Correctly sexing guinea pigs can be a challenge. And properly sexing pups is the most challenging of all. It helps to be able to examine guinea pigs of both sex to determine the subtle differences. You may have some difficulty early on figuring out who is who but by 3 weeks of age, sex should be easier to determine. Make sure the male pups are removed from the mother at 3 weeks of age. The tips on the SEXING page may also help. http://www.guinealynx.com/sexing_pups.html

Their genitals will look totally different. A female has a "slit" or "lips" while the male has this "belly button" thing in the middle of his genitals. You can tell the difference actually at a very young age if you know the difference.

then it is probly a girl because you can almost always tell with boys, but it might not be "mature" enough yet to tell

When they are babies, it *can* be difficult to tell if you are not used to looking at piggie privates. Try this site for some good pictures & an explanation on how to tell the difference: http://www.guinealynx.info/sexing.html Also, please do yourself & your piggie a favor & check out this link too: http://www.aracnet.com/cgi-usr/seagull/vetfinder.cgi It sounds like the vet you saw was not very knowledgable about cavies (guinea pigs). This can mean the difference between life & death in an emergency, so you want to have someone you can trust & knows what they're doing! I'm sure the vet you saw was a good vet, but most vets do not care for exotics. Vets that treat exotics (especially really good ones) are somewhat difficult to find, so start looking now to avoid any problems later. Good luck!

http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm You do need to look for a new vet. If your piggie gets sick, you're not going to want to go to that vet.

First of all, do yourself and your pets a favor by selecting a vet who specializes in exotic animals. If your vet cannot tell the difference between a male and a female, then there's a huge problem. Your wasting your money. Go to cavyspirit.com. They have a wealth of information, informative links, and have pictures that will help you sex your guinea pig. Also, the Vet Specialist will be able to tell you with pretty good certainty if your pig is possibly pregnant... Good luck Lori
