what is genetic engineering and how does it impact plant development and agriculture
-
Answer:
Genetic engineering is the manipulation of the basic building blocks of life, DNA. This can and has had profound effects in the development of new strains of plants such as Soya crops etc. This can give increased yields to crops, the reduction in the amount of insecticides used etc. Also by introducing genes from animals , into plants, that protect them from cold could allow those crops to be grown over wider climate ranges so increasing yields. The downside could be unforeseen crossing of engineered plants into others that might not be wanted and also the loss of natural genetic material .
