What are the advantages of organic farming?

  • I was just on a website that listed a few advantages and health reasons. But what have you heard about organic farming?

    So organic by definition means that you input no synthetic fertilizers, nor apply synthetic pesticides. In theory this seems to reason to be a safer alternative, however, many of the most dangerous chemicals known to man have come from plants, not chemicals synthetically made. So organic isn't exactly a saving grace. But, as with numerous other things, the media caught hold and blew things out of proportion and skewed facts and left others out, and most people won't take the time to read for themselves or take university courses to learn the truth. I'm not altogether against organic, but right now people are doing it for the wrong reasons or just because the media says its good.

I'm a produce broker in south Jersey for 37 yrs. If you are concerned about eating healthy , almost all crops grown in the U S are safe to eat with or without chemicals . As an organic grower of fruits and veggies , you will need a target market willing to buy from you. We all hope , wish , & think organic is great . Are people educated enough to accept food with bug holes , not very nice looking , willing to spend more $$$$ cause it is organic ??? and so on . This area of organic farming growing & selling is very special. The T V show in the 60s GREEN ACRES will help answers any questions about down home farming .

The greatest advantage without a doubt is economic. There is a premium market (which in my opinion is generally unjustified...certain crops I can accept organic) which encourages organic farming, because farmers can sell their crops for far more than they would with "conventional" farming. My biggest problems with organic farming is that good organic techniques can be applied to conventional techniques. But it doesn't go the other way. Sometimes (usually, if well managed), chemicals just do the job with little or no consequences.
