Chinese Farming Methods?

How does non organic methods of farming cause soil erosion?

  • Please could somone tell me what soil erosion is and how conventional methods of farming cause this/harm the envioronment.

  • Answer:

Maybe your question should be why is organic farming causing soil erosion the same as conventional methods. While your at it why not tie it into the erosion that occurs in areas where tillage does not occur. Rodents, rain and wind. go out into a field, tilled not tilled it makes no difference, rodents create trails, the trails expose bare soil which wind and rain then exploit to cause erosion. your question only wishes to examine one cause, is there a reason you ignore other potential causes?

Bk's mostly right. Tilling the soil is the main cause of soil erosion. By some definitions any bare dirt exposed to the elements could be called erosion. some think loss of topsoil is the most serious environmental threat caused by typical farming. There is evidence that organic methods may reduce soil erosion: (http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v330/n6146/pdf/330370a0.pdf But the best way is to not till the soil at all. Right now there is no proven organic no-till method, though there is research being done to develop one. It involves using a heavy roller to kill the cover crop by crushing it before planting.
