Why is farming technology so important now a days?

Technology is important, but it can still only enhance a farmer's production. GPS guidance can reduce a grower's costs by eliminating overlaps, which would double chemical/fertilizer application in the overlapped area. This also reduces fuel consumption and costs, as it would eliminate unnecessary passes across a field. When used in conjunction with soil sampling, fertilizer can be applied only to the areas of the field that require it, and only in the needed amounts. I give the example of GPS because it is the fastest growing technological segment in agriculture today, although technology takes many shapes. The thing technology cannot do, though, is replace the farmer. A good farmer knows when to plant his/her crops in conjunction with soil and weather conditions, and when to harvest to maximize the crop's value, to himself/herself and to the final consumer. A good farmer also is a good steward of the land, taking care of it so it will be productive for generations to come.
