What is the difference between intensive farming and organic farming?

What is the difference between organic and hydrophonic farming :) ?

  • does hydrophonic farming have to do with genetically modified food at all??

  • Answer:

Organic farming uses agricultural inputs that are derived from organic materials. example you use chicken dung cow manure to fertilize. you extract plant juice with pesticidal effects to ward off disease. Strictly oragnic farming also involves that the source of inputs say for example the chicken dung source should be from chicken that are raised organically. Hydrophonics however is a way of growing plants in liquid medium. The liquid medium contains chemicals that has in a way mimicked the optimum level of macro and micronutrients a growing plant will need. As for the question if hydrophonic farming and its relationship with GMOs. It should be a different thing as GMOs usually involved alteration of the genetic make up of the certain organism. and Hydrophonics is not altering the genetic make up. you can use genetically modified or non GMO seedling and grow it in hydrophonics way.

Hydroponic farming is farming without soil. Nutrients and water are delivered to plants via tubing. Sunlight is provided by lighting. I have never seen hydroponics used but I have heard it described. I have found hydroponic lettuce in the grocery store. I also know that marijuana growers use it to grow inside houses. I don't think that it has anything to do with organics.

As a small addition to previous answers: While you are organic farming, the use of pesticide and herbicide is (almost) strictly forbidden. Also you'd better isolate your land from your neighbors if they are applying any kind of the mentioned chemicals. Organic farming should be more of a philosophy or "guidelines" but i must admit, i rarely come across a real organic farm. Cover crops should be used in order to keep your land intact and to provide nutrition sometimes you just have to plow what you have on land. It's a messy thing but at the end, it worth. (Sustainability...It's totally another issue) Hydrophonic greenhouses...Hi-tech...So, can one say they are on different poles? Likely. About GMO aspect of hydrophonics. Contrary to belief, one can attain rather "natural" production by hydrophonics (such as huge facilities in Israel). The newer technology in hydroponics (such as Nutrient film technique) combined with GMO's can easily boost the production. Btw, don't get tricked by "newer" technology which is actually from 60's and 70's. Any further questions are welcomed!
