As the long shot said, there is no such thing. It's a term coined by animal rights extremists to fool unknowing people like you. Here's something else you need to consider; regardless of the size of their operation, all livestock producers are in the business to do what? Make money, that's what. Animals that are mistreated and tortured as you foolishly believe, do not grow and gain weight. Animals that do not grow or gain weight do not make the producer any money. A person would have to be a complete idiot to mistreat the animals they are depending on to make a living. On the other hand, animals that are neglected are almost ALWAYS owned by non-farmers. I've seen it more times than I can count; some white trash family moves to the country and think they just absolutely have to have a horse, but like an alcoholic they can't stop with just one. They end up with 2-6 horses and not nearly enough pasture for the number of animals. Winter comes with higher heating and electric bills and the people can't even pay their utility bills, let alone buy hay for the horses. I know of more than one occasion where a local cattle farmer has without being asked, brought a big bale of hay and parked it in the lot so the animals would have something to eat. They do that without any expectation of being compensated for the hay, it's just that they can't bear to see animals being neglected. And in several southern Missouri counties, a big problem isn't people dumping out cats and dogs, it's dumping horses. The animals try to survive any way the can, grazing in people's yards and along roadsides where they get hit by cars. Often times the horses are aged with bad teeth and slowly starve to death when forced to make it on their own. The sheriff is usually called on to shoot the animal to put it out of its misery. And you think confined livestock farms are cruel????? Wake up! Maybe you better direct your effort at the trash who have horses but can't even buy their own groceries without using food stamps.

A farm raises animals. A factory processes them into consumer products. No factories raise and process animals at the same facility. In some cases a company will own the farm then process the animals. They own and control the process from start to end. The family farm is taken out of the picture. Maple Leaf Foods will process grain into feed, raise hogs in their own barns and then slaugher them. You can consider that a factory farm since its owned by the factory but the stages are in different locations.
