American agriculture problem?

What can american agriculture do to help the usa obesity problem?

  • Answer:

American Agriculture bears no responsibility for this. Their involvement is strictly their ability to be incredibly efficient at delivering a high quality product at ridiculously low prices. You are asking a large group of individual businesses to poke their collective nose into the affairs of the individual. Granted, a big part of the obesity issue is the low cost of our high quality food (yes it is high quality, if it weren't, then it would not be so easy to gain weight), however, the consumption of the product is entirely up to the individual. Thus obesity is not the problem of the many, rather it is the problem of the individual. It is entirely the responsibility of the individual to control his or her calorie consumption.

Nothing. producing more or less food will only effect the price and over eaters will not change their consumption habits because of it.

I agree that obesity is not the American farmer's fault. However, as a smart business farmers should identify opportunities much like the organic demand as allowed the upselling of specialized products. Leaner beef is a start. True, to stop obesity you should just cut down on the beef but people won't buy that. Other options are to produce "natural" sweeteners that are low calorie. I've seen the green packets but can't remember what that is. The agricultural associations also have a lot of funding to help educate. I know the Dairy Council around Kansas City has a session on nutrition in every elementary school within 100 miles in every elementary school that will let them.

Im sorry but I dont believe agriculture has any link to the obesity issue. It's more of a lifestyle issue that needs to be solved by both food manufacturers and the individual/community.

Nope. They are not responsible for obesity. You could say the Government is. During WWII the government was concerned about undernourishment of its recruits so it started subsidizing food in the way of school lunches, WIC, food stamps and the like. Its economics. YOu subsidize something and you will find the consequences of excess.

the long shot

Refrain from stripping the bran off the wheat before production.
