Where can I learn how do organic farming?

What is the best way to learn about farming?

  • i am currently in school for welding, but would like to learn the best way to start learning how to aquire land and learn to farm

  • Answer:

You can take all the courses you want but hands on experience is the best teacher. Just like welding, to become good at it you have to do it. Right now I think that you should look at leasing land it is much cheaper than owning it. The cost of equipment is exorbitant and if you can afford some equipment you might start with custom farming where you charge for the use of the equipment. It minimizes the risks but you will have to travel a lot.

Your best way to learn about farming is the same as you will need to learn about being a good welder. To borrow part of a line from The Future Farmers of America's motto, "Learning to Do, Doing to learn...". In other words, education and experience.

Become a seasonal worker and travel the country learning from different types of farms. Become a willing worker (see link). With these links you can travel the world very cheaply and gain a huge amount of knowledge. Then pick you spot, your crops or whatever and study the specifics. Don't forget that you need to learn a lot about business, financing and marketing to have a hope of success . . .

Easiest way is "to fall in to it totally". Soon you will be an expert!

You should read and develop some idea of the type of farming you would like to pursue. This will answer lots of questions for you such as how much land you'll need, ect... Once you determine what you want to do seek out employment or internship opportunities at a farm where you can learn the skills first hand. This will also give you an idea if you really want to do that work or not. There are lots of opportunities working with farmers who are glad to share their knowledge.
