Are screw in tips for pool cue sticks any good?

  • Answer:

The tip of the cue is one of the most important parts of the whole cue. The butt of the cue is for looks and feel, the shaft, ferrule, and tip is the business end of a cue. Screw in tips were invented to make it easy and cheap for vending companies and pool rooms to replace tons of tips at a low cost with little regard to the playability of the cue. Two piece cues use glue on leather tips that range in hardness from very soft, which allows for most people to impart more english on the ball) to very hard, which is the choice of most pro players I know. The tip of the cue must hold chalk well to prevent miscues, it must be shaped properly to allow for proper contact with the cue ball, and it should provide the right "feel" for the touch of the individual player. All that being said, the short answer to your questions is no, screw on tips are not any god for pool sticks.
