Is it recommended to use newspaper to wipe car windshields?

• I have seen lots of drivers of cabs (for rent) using newspaper to wipe the windshields after pouring water. Is there a reason that newspaper is better than sponge bars or clothes? He mentioned using newspaper avoids scratches. Is that true? What is better option - to use sponges OR newspaper?

  Using newspaper do avoid scratches but it is mainly because of the way it is used. Typically on Indian conditions, lot of dust/sand sticks to the outside of car. If you try to rub a wet sponge, the sponge holds the dust and drags it on the surface, hence scratching it. Instead, wet the area to be cleaned with a mug of water and spread the newspaper on the wet area. Do not rub. The paper will absorb the water and you can throw it away.
