Answer:
Editing Wikipedia, if your purpose really is to expand your knowledge of a specific topic other than Wikipedia politics. If your Star Wars costume is good, other Star Wars fans will grant you respect for your skills. But if your Wikipedia edits are good, what sort of props do you get for that? An image of a medal before some jackass reverts your edits and the same person who gave you the 'medal' upholds the revert?

Editing wikipedia articles may not be the greatest way to spend your free time, but at least you are learning things and sharing your knowledge. So no, I would not say it is pointless/useless.

Jimbo's greed is directly relevant to why editing Wikipedia is pointless. As long as the perception remains that Wikipedia has some inaccurate content but that something can actually be done to improve it, the donations will keep rolling in and thousands of idiots will waste their time editing its articles. By editing Wikipedia, all you're doing is helping line Jimbo's pockets. Maybe when you make a Star Wars costume you're helping line George Lucas' pockets, but at least you also have something to wear when you fall behind on your laundry.

What kind of costumes are we talking about? Because the world needs more princess Lela slave bikini outfits tbh I guess a hobby is only useless if you do not gain any useful skills that can be translated to work. Making costumes would be great practise for a tailor, and being a wikipedia editor would certainly make you a favourite for pub quizzes. The only useless hobby I can think of is cup stacking, that sport where people try to stack cups as fast as they possibly can. It takes 5 minutes to edit an article on wikipedia, and once button click to revert it to an older version. Wikipedia is designed so that blatant vandalism is almost impossible. Never use wikipedia for academic purposes, but its convenient to cross check information obtained from other sources. I've always found the computer science / maths articles to be fairly accurate. Even Brittanica has errors in their articles.
