How reliable is Wikipedia? Are there any free alternatives that are NOT open for editing by whoever?

Wikipedia is the most exhaustive and fairly reliable encyclopaedia on the internet. I don't think a survey has been done or even is possible to conduct, to calculate the reliability statistics of Wikipedia. Sure anyone can edit Wikipedia but there are many people and bots reverting vandalism very quickly. Why not just check the sources and see you trust the information or not?

wikipedia is as reliable as the sources cited. Also, if content is under contention, it will say so, or you can mark it as such, and it will be investigated.

there has been a test of which one is better a dictionary or wikipedia. It wasn't that much different because the dictionary gets old very fast but wikipedia is always getting fresher facts.

it is very reliable! anyone can edit it, but false/unproven claims are taken off by users or even administrators. people who have vandalized repeatedly get their ips blocked. every statement is backed up, see the big list of references at the bottom? that proves the reliability. 99.87% of claims are true and proven, .12% false, .01 unproven.
