Whats the newest or best messenger program? (Windows live/msn)?

I use Windows Live Messenger alot. I have version 8.1. Is this the newest? and are there any better (still free) alternatives?

I use the WLM,too. Version 8.1 is the newest final version. But the newst version (beta) is 8.5. An alternative is the "Trillian Messenger".

I use Windows Live (MSN) too and also Yahoo messenger... Prefer Windows. Also use messengers attached to Answers ( the IM in 360) and messengers in individual sites (e.g. Smooch) ,
