I'm not familiar with the newest version of Messenger Plus but it has to be something with the settings. Enter your Messenger Plus settings and search for some kind of option that is connected with colors.

messenger plus dont work with the windows live messenger 2009 beta... just uninstall it and go back to windows live messenger 8.5 and download windows live messenger 2009 when its officially released
