Do you have a firewall or a security software on the system? Highly likely that the fireawll is filtering the information being sent to the Internet. Disable the firewall then try to sign in. If you ain't pretty sure about disabling the security software then have it reconfigured to allow MSN/Windows Live Messenger full access to the Internet. Hope this helps.
