Is windows live messanger and msn messanger the same thing???

how come when i want to download msn messanger, i get directed to a page saying to install windows live messanger?????/

basically windows live messenger is msn - just the newer version. They released msn up to version 9.0 i think, and then theres windows live messenger - but its the same thing just with a new interface (same system etc.) so if people log in on the old msn it still comes up in windows live messenger
