I think there were several reasons for disappointment. First, following Beijing was almost impossible. They had lots of cheap labor and a government willing to pay anything to show off to the world, Secondly, a movie maker in charge, so there were going to be many special effects and the media was going to be part of it before it ever happened. Finally, as an English major I enjoyed many of the more subtle aspects reflecting British culture and history. I can see how some would not appreciate that. All that having been said, I think it was a beautiful show. I am an American who loves traveling in Britain and the British people. My favorite part was Paul McCartney.

I didn't see it. Nothing could make me watch 4 hours of an opening for the Olympics. From what you are describing it seems like their opening was just out of time for the way the world is now. I did see the bit with the Queen on one of the news shows. Made me laugh and if I was her I'd get bored sitting for 4 hours,lol agree to disagree about Mr McCartney ;)
