How does google search engine works?

Google has things called web crawlers which go through the web taking data from web pages and following links on those pages. In this way it takes data from a a very large number of sites on the internet, although there are also a lot it misses, often due to those sites having no one else linking to them (so Google simply doesn't know they exist). The more regularly the pages are updated, the more often the web crawlers will visit those pages, to make sure the data that is stored from that page is up-to-date. An index is then created from the web pages that the web crawler has visited so when you search for a word, Google's computers don't have to search the entire web for that word, they just have to check what pages in their index use that word. The results are returned based on an algorithm Google has created called PageRank. This uses many different ways to calculate a page's importance, and so the order in which pages are displayed. The most significant one involves checking how many other sites link to that page. If a page has thousands of other sites linking to it Google assumes that page must be a relevant one to the topic. This method is particularly clever because it is taking advantage of human judgement to determine which pages are most relevant to a topic. The result of this is that if, for example, you search for "Doctor Who", the first results will be useful pages like the Doctor Who official site and the Wikipedia entry on Doctor Who, rather than a MySpace page about someone who loves Doctor Who but has little to actually say other than that.
