Here in Canada, it takes years and years to process legal and other papers to adopt a Canadian child than to adopt a child from Africa or Asia. I am highly against this. My parents are immigrants from South Asia and we are 100% against the adoption policies in Canada. It takes less than a year to adopt a foreign child compare to a Canadian child. Also, during Tsunami most people who received refugee visas are criminals and terrorists in their back home. Canada was so quick to issue visas to these criminals, they did not even check the backgrounds. For example, I know a Thai serial rapist currently live in Toronto Ontario. PLEASE DO NOT issue visas like that. My parents came to Canada after 3 year full background check and a 4 hour interview. They came to Canada based on their educational background. But during Tsunami, we gave away visas to criminals without ANY background at all.

such positive answers today! i agree... each child should have a loving home... but at least the kids here have some kind of home to be in... the children in haiti have nothing... i guess the concept of "nothing" is too hard for some people here to understand

To Cricket ... tell that to my son who was in 8 foster homes before he was 3 years old ... or my other son who was beaten and abused with broken limbs while in one of many abusive foster homes. Or the teenager who's hit 31 homes so far ... yes foster children are bounced in your state and in every state. The shortage of trained foster homes makes children easy to be replaced by an "easier" kid. Foster agencies may be non profit but someone's making good money somewhere and the only way to do that is to keep these kids in the system and in their agency. They put kids in homes that aren't prepared for them and then when the foster parent burns out, they put them somewhere else. In the best interest of the child sometimes means in the best interest of my business.

The children in Haiti have no one--even the adults are finding it hard to survive. Children in foster care today are NOT bounced fro home to home---or not in my state they are NoT. Children are rarely moved from one home to another home---only as a last resort.

Probably because when people think of countries like Haiti, which is a very poor country they think the child is probably living in bad conditions, not eating enough etc. whereas when they think of the American/UK system they think the child will be well looked after because we are richer countries, which i know is not necessarily true. I honestly think that their hearts are in the right place but they just need to learn more about the facts. =)
They are not exotic enough.....and the Aps don't want the child's mother in the picture. Kids in the US foster care system don't meet the Aps "conditions".

9 times out of 10 I agree with you. There are not enough foster parents and foster-to-adopt parents in this country to take all of the kids who are in need. However, I do think that in the case of such a disaster, when there are so many children in need, that I give people a pass for looking to adopt. That said, I still think it is preferable to send that money to a reputable charity (Red Cross, Save the Children, etc) and adopt from foster care for free here in country.

ive been writing the same answer to every "how can i adopt from haiti" question...take care of Americas children first..i cant stand people that adopt outside of America, they make me sick, its like they think they are humanitarians because they "saved" a child in poor conditions.there are very poor conditions here too,but i guess they think they will get more "credit" or "attention" if they adopt from another country. and another thing, why wait for a disaster to happen to adopt from haiti, its one of the poorest places in the world and these "humanitarians" didn't bother to care they've been going hungry for years..i said it once,i will say it again...People are such HYPOCRITES!!
