World Vision is a great organization. Another great place for you to look is Compassion International. You can choose a child to sponsor by a number of factors. You are matched directly with that child. You will be thier only sponsor. I choose the two I sponsor based on their birthdays. My sponsor payment enables them to go a mission center in their native country, where they learn about Jesus. Activities are provided, which is especially important for children not yet in school. What you need to remember is that while $30 may not seem like much to us, many of these countries have a monthly income of $100, as in the case of one of my sponsored children. I also have the option of giving an additional gift for many special occasions. I gave money for Christmas last year, that ended up saving a life. My sponsored child's mother had complications after giving birth to another child. She was taken to the hospital, and was given a blood transfusion. Her husband is a farmer, and had no idea how to pay the hospital bill. Through God's divine grace, my gift took care of that need. I received a welcome packet upon my initial commitment. I correspond with each of "my children" and their families. I have recieved a thank you letter for each additional gift I have given. I also have pictures one of my children has drawn on my wall. I highly recommend this organization. You can go to their website and choose a child, and call their 1 800 number to ask any questions you have.

World Vision Children is legit. They spend about $800 mil total annually. Breakdown: 86.4% of donated money goes to the children. As a comparison, Red Cross (a model of efficiency) spends 91.5% on services. 8.4% goes to fund-raising (mostly those TV commercials). http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/search.summary/orgid/4768.htm They're also on the BBB's national list of charities. http://charityreports.bbb.org/Public/Report.aspx?CharityID=2544

It's not a scam. World Vision is actually one of the most reputable charities in the country. Thirty dollars is not worth that much here, but in third world countries that is a lot of money. World vision makes the monthly amount small so that it is affordable for people on tight budgets. Most of those kids end up with multiple sponsors and the combined money goes to pay for food, educational services, medical care, and community projects such as wells. Tyff Taff, The one dollar a month is the allowance for general household needs. The families are not given the money directly. World Vision pays for educational and medical costs and provides the family with food.

I'd look at SOS Children as well (www.soschildren.org) They use 100% of your sponsorship to give a family to an orphaned or abandoned child, and have a dedicated mother caring for a family of kids. With over 123 countries to choose from it is hard to decide where to support but I'm glad there is this choice so you are not limited. You get a picture of your child and background details when you start and through the year you get updates about how your sponsored child is doing. Hope the info is useful.

http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=4768#.Utv7wqwo5Ms This site shows the break down of the company. I give to them and it seems very legit, but the president does bring home quite a bit of money each year (400,000.00 or so). Decide for yourself.

In response to Miles: Do you not realize that people have to make a living somehow? If it weren't for those people in that building working for this organization that helps the lives of other people then children and families in third world countries would be suffering even more than what they already are. So yes, I sure am happy to see the volunteers of these organizations getting their little compensation to also help pay their bills and put food on their own tables so that they can get up each and every morning and go to work to make the lives of others less fortunate better. Its a selfless job and if you actually did your research on it, you would see that the pay for these employees at these organizations are very small. Less than minimal wage actually. They don't do it for the money, like I said its a selfless career. As for the very nice building that was built for these employees to work in, guess what the money that sponsors donate wasn't used for the building. If you would've done your research before making your obscure claim, our U.S government helped to finance this building, thats right us tax payers. And I am certainly happy to see my hard earned taxes go toward and building of such amazing use. So next time before you start making false claims, do your research. Google is a wonderful source of information ;)

The child from World Vision doesnt come and live with you or anything... its not a scam. My family and I sponsor one, and we get letters from her(she lives in India) and they're written in Indian and translated in English. She tells us stories of her family, daily life, ect. She also sends us very nice pictures! Next summer, my family and I might be going out to see her. Its a great program and it really helps children in need... you get to pick out your child to! World Vision(people who volunteered) finds these children-some with or without homes and take them in. Then, you pay for their food, school, and clothes.
