There are many factors involved. How far away is the track where you will race? How tough is the competition? How well do you want to run? How many people are in your racing division? Let's just figure that you already own a kart, helmet, tools, and some spare parts. Travel expenses like gasoline and food can add up. Entry fees can be a bit high depending on the class you run in. Then you also need a pit pass for you and whoever else is part of your team. I've seen both ends of the spectrum. One track requires you to buy a new set of tires every weekend just to be competitive, while another track you might need to buy a tire only once in a while. The cost will be different depending on if you're running dirt or asphalt, oval, or road course. In my experience, maintaining a dirt kart was more expensive than asphalt. I haven't even mentioned a trailer to haul your stuff in. Many people use a pick up truck or small station wagon, while others have a trailer full of karts and spare parts. My last year of karting, I raced at a small track nearby. Entry fees were about $20. I usually spent less than $10 bucks on track food. Bringing your own food can save money. A few bucks for kart oil and some fuel were my only other expenses.

Kelsi, the best places to start are going to www.nkn.com That is the website for the National Karting News website. You'll find alot of information there. If you don't see what you're looking for, don't hesitate to call them. They will send you a copy of the magazine with articles about getting started. They also have 2 buying guide issues devoted to karts and protective gear. If there is a local kart track or dealer, go with your dad and ask lots of questions. The'll be happy to tell you about what's the most popular kart and racing class in the area. Other kart racing families willl be happy to talk to you too and help give you good advice. For your first year, don't rule out buying a used kart. You need all the experience you can get and chances are you won't be contesting for wins yet.The money you save you can put towards what seems to be the best kart for the following year. Good luck and have a great time!

Take the other approach, how much racing can you afford? Once you define that, it determines what class to run in and how often. Pick the events to compete in based on chances of winning and cost to compete. Go-Kart racing has many levels, if you start low, it is easier to be competitive on a smaller budget. The less you invest in a car and the other things, the more races you can run in. The more races you run in the more experience you gain. Go to some local go-kart races, get a pit pass and talk to the teams. Get a rule book and start planning based on what you can afford.
