What do I need to detune my board?

Just bought a new snowboard, how much do I need to detune my edges?

  • im going to be doing mostly just boxes/rails/butters, so how much should i detune? is there any certain kind of file or stone I need to purchase? something from the local hardware ...show more

  • Answer:

You need to detune both the heel and toe edge on the tip and the tail. A file should be used from the widest part of the board up to where the edge stops. You should try to file off a little bit where you start to file and increase as you go. There are also stones that are used. Stones and files are usually available at shops that tune skis and snowboards. The stone is passed lightly on both edges and then used for several more passes over the area that has been tuned with a file.

depends on your locale. if you're in the rockies (colorado, utah especially, where it's dry and never icy) detune those edges all the way. if you're on the east coast, where it's always crusty and icy, detune as little as possible. anywhere else (west coast, canadian rockies) somewhere in-between. a metal file from your local hardware shop will do.
