Answer:
The way boarders and skiers fall is different. Though it's wise to wear one no matter what, you normally aren't going to fall back onto your head skiing, but it can happen a lot boarding. Snowboarding is harder to learn (and more painful at least to me), and seems to take people anywhere from 2-4 days to get decent enough to make it down hills without falling. But after learning how to, it's said to be fairly easy to pick up how to do stuff.

They recommend skiers and boarders wear helmets. If you catch an edge while boarding you can bail pretty bad. Wearing a helmet is just plain smart. Also if you ride park you must wear a helmet. As far as is it hard, it depends on who you are and how quickly you pick it up. Everyone is different. On average snowboarding is harder to learn than skiing but the learning curve is better for boarders. It took me about 4 days to feel comfortable on blue runs but everyone is different.

I would say more people that snowboard where helmets due to the fact snowboarding is "newer" then skiing. Skiing has been around longer so the average number of people can ski fine but more people are starting to get into snowboarding and since wearing a helmet is smarter then not wearing on now a days that might be why you see more snowboarders with helmets. A concussion is the second most common snowboarding injury there is. As for how long it will take that depends on you. Since you ski also its harder to learn to snowboard. As for someone that has just started and never skied before either it might take around 10 full days before they can go down a blue at all. and maybe around 20 till they can go down without falling or minimal falling. It also depends on the mountain your on when saying blue. I have been to some really easy blues that should be green but the mountain was just so large they had so many trails. But I have also see blues that should be black but the mountain was small and didn't have many trails.
