Clothes For Snowboarding?

Hi, I'm going snowboarding for the first time tomorrow and I have a couple questions mainly about clothes for snowboarding. Is it okay to wear a water resistant winter jacket ...show more

Answer:
Let me start from the bottom up: first never make the same mistake that many beginners make by doubling up on socks. I won't go into the long list of problems you will have if you were to do this so just save yourself the hassle and buy any descent pair of snowboarding/skiing socks which are slightly thicker than normal socks but you won't sacrifice weight or density. Second, it's perfectly fine to wear sweatpants underneath snowboard pants but any good pair of snowboarding pants should suffice to keep your legs and bottom warm, but keep in mind it will be poofy so I'd recommend some thermals to cut down on the weight. Lastly, how warm you want to be will depend on where you are snowboarding. Personally, a fleech under a winter jacket sounds like a LOT of layers, especially if you plan on snowboarding. Your body will heat up and even though it's recommended to layer, do you really want to be going back and forth to your locker/car to take layers off and/or put them on as needed? I've snowboarded in California and Colorado in everything from snowstorm conditions to sunny days and I've been perfectly fine with an Under Armour cold gear mock turtleneck and any winter jacket with descent amount of lining (not too much, or you'll overheat). I'd nixed the fleece and just wear the jacket as long as you have thermals or a descent turtleneck.

Since you have given no indication of the expected temperature or weather conditions it is difficult to say what you need to wear. But in general I would advise you to dress warm -- thermal underwear to start -- you are going to spend a lot of time on the ground! Very warm socks. A couple of layers of clothes under the jackets too. You can always unzip or strip down if you are hot. Also, because when snowboarding both of your feet are on the same deck you tend to fall the same way every time, if the snow is packed where you are this means repeated hard falls on same spot on your body: your coccyx or just above will likely be subject to bruising. For this reason it is a good idea for first time snowboarders to wear padded pants. No joke, most ski shops sell them. If you are only going out for an hour or two you might be ok without but if you are going to put a full day into it you will be glad! Hope this helps.

hawaiian shirt works gets attn, thong but you may want to take along some hot pocket warmers. knee high socks do the trick.
