Skiing or Snowboarding Equipment: which is cheaper?

  • I live in San Jose, California. My two other sisters and I are planning to pick up snowboarding. But I hear snowboarding gear is expensive. And we have to buy 3 sets! I don't want ...show more

  • Answer:

When it comes to used gear both sports have relatively inexpensive gear. When buying new, snowboarding equipment, especially the entry level packages, are a lot cheaper than ski equipment. Just looking at a few sites will give you an idea of cost. I just looked at a board, bindings, and boots from a website...all high end stuff and I could put a package together for under $900. As compared to most ski boots nowadays that start at $650...add skis and bindings and you are easily over $1400. Of course you can always get deals on both types of equipment. I say rent the stuff a few times to see if you even like it before you waste money on it. Most ski areas rent snowboards too.

depends Cheaper snowboards are more expensive than cheaper skiis but Better snowboards are less expensive than expensive skiis If planning on going big, snowboard. snowboarding has basically a range of (not realistic) 300$-800$ and skiis are (not realistic just example) 200$-1000$

They are about the same. I'd give the nod to snowboarding because there is more competition for gear. Essentially, the only difference in gear is boots, bindings and either skis or a board. Maybe for your first time out, rent equipment. Try both and see which you like better. Most resorts will allow you to swap equipment once during the day for no charge.

You should probably search for some used Snowboarding equipment. until you guys decide that you really like snowboarding

I think skiing is cheaper, but I'm sure it depends on the brands you're getting. Try looking on ebay or craigslist for used stuff. You could always rent too!

Idk, but snowboarding is a HECK of a lot more fun! I've done both and absolutely love snowboarding.
