Do figure skaters get to pick their own costumes? Why do some skaters have so many fugly outfits?

    It depends. Some skaters choose or even design their own costumes. Sometimes they leave it up to the designer and some are at the mercy of their team which may include coaches, mothers or whoever. Budget limitations also need to be considered but unfortunately you can't always buy good taste. Not every Vera Wang was good. Attempts to be creative or edgy a lot of times miss the mark as well, but I suppose it is a matter of opinion. I assume some skaters just go for shock value. Agree about Yuna and Kiiri and would like to add Akiko Suzuki as well. The worst dressed on my list are the Russians. The barely-there dresses with liberal use of illusion fabric are just horrible and largely age-inappropriate.

Depends. Bottom line is: the costume should enhance the program music, not overpower or distract from it. That fact alone should be considered when choosing a costume. JMO, Nicole Bobek's costumes always enhanced her music. Her program to "Evita" comes to mind. Patrick Chan's current costume-a simple "shirt" didn't take away from his performance.

I honestly know nothing about Figure Skating,but this simply a style issue,some folks want to appear muscular or smooth or sexy or pretty etc. Thats all it is certain fabrics move or undulate when sliding through the air,chiffon or sheer fabrics silky taffeta A skater can wear jeans if thats the way they want to look,or feel!
