Progress in figure skating after 7 months?

How much progress can I make in figure skating by December?

It's like asking how long a piece of string is. No-one can tell you exactly, because everyone learns and progresses at different rates, and hits learning plateaus at different times. For example, if you asked the people at my rink in early February where I would be in August this year, they probably all would have said "Preliminary" because I was just about to pass Free Skate 1. It's now nearly July and I still haven't passed Free Skate 2, because of one element - consecutive changes of edge. "I took a couple of months off from skating because I wasn't happy with the progress I made so far." Your problem is your attitude. What, you're not learning fast enough so you just throw a hissy fit and quit? Huh? To progress in this sport takes HARD WORK and DEDICATION. You can't just expect to step on the ice and boom, you're progressing. You need to practice, practice, practice. While it would be ideal for you to go to the rink more times a week, a 1.5 hr practice outside of your lesson should be sufficient for your level - as long as you work hard. I'm not talking drifting around for half an hour and half-heartedly doing some elements, I'm talking about working your elements over and over and over, full-tilt, non-stop (except for occasional drinks breaks) for an hour and a half. I don't care if it's not what you want to hear, because it's what you NEED to hear. The girls you see jumping and spinning have probably been skating for years. It takes a lot of work and a fair amount of time to get to that point. So, to sum up: I can't tell you where you'll be in December 2011. No-one can. Especially with your attitude.

Everyone is different and everyone progresses at a different rate, but you could expect to be Basic 6 or 7, and you'll be learning ballet jumps and bunny hops, etc. You could possibly be as high as Basic 8, and working on waltz jumps and scratch spins. However, remember that skating isn't all about jumps, you need to focus on making basic things like crossovers, spirals, or edges really good too. Also, just a side note, tell your mom that you're not going to be able to get higher unless you practice more, that may help her let you skate more often.

Its impossible to be able to telI. I think you will get pretty far if you try really hard. I've been skating for about a year, and I'm in Freestyle 5 and working on my flip and lutz. If you try really hard, by skating and going to public skates as much as you can, stretching and getting yourself more flexible, and practicing things off ice, you can get pretty far. I moved up fast by stretching, practicing off ice, going to a lot of public skates and practicing, and just working hard. Skating takes time to get good, so you need patience, but when your in the basic levels you move up faster. For my rink we started the waltz jumpat basic 8-freestyle 1, (you should go on your rinks website if it has one or someting and see what you do in each level) so if you reach somewhere around that level you should be starting all those cool jumps and spins. One thing you might want to know is once you start doing jumps and spins, it takes more time to move up, so a lot of people start getting coaches. Try hard and practice a lot, and beofre you know it you will be working on jumps. GOOD LUCK!
