Answer:
For the forward spin, make sure you're NOT putting your free foot behind you. That pulls you off the axis and makes the toepick catch, causing the spin to travel out of control. Do a two-foot spin on the balls of your feet (pick up your toes and heels) and then gently shift your weight and lift the FREE KNEE in front. Hold your free foot firmly against the inside ankle of your spinning foot, toe down. Be sure to stand up straight and keep your arms open in a round circle in front - pulling in right away sends beginners careening. It takes practice and patience to not rush the spin, but it will pay off in the long run, even if it makes you uncomfortable at first. Practice balancing in that position off-ice. Do it at least 20 times a day for 20-30 seconds each time. Both feet so that you built strength and balance for both the forward and backward spins. Backspin - The easiest entrance is to do a two-foot spin and lift the other knee. For an anti-clockwise spinner, they'd lift the left knee. You have to be completely over the spinning side, which is what makes the spin difficult. The other beginner entrance is to stand with your left toepick in the ice behind your right foot. Hold your arms over the right side of your body. Turn the right foot to the left, towards that toepick. Keep the arms checked to the right, but bring the shoulders around with the hips. Pick up the left foot in front once you've turned and hold the spin position on the ball of the foot. (It feels like a back outside edge ont he rocker.) Practicing on a harness really helps with the backspin, but you'd need to take private lessons for that training. Good luck.

Think about standing really straight and balanced over the ball of your foot. For both of them, really.

The back spin is hard. You should really bend your knees and remember to bend your back a little. Your arms should go against the turn and really turn your back against the spin like there's someone behind you and you want to talk to the. It's very important in a spin to open your free leg into the air for a few seconds and quickly pull in. That's how you gain speed in a spin. You're supposed to spin on your toe pick but you spin from the outside of it not the inside.
