How can I learn to figure skate?

I want to learn how to figure skate, but it is way too expensive. And I don't live near an ice rink.?

  • I always wanted to learn how to figure skate! Is it impossible to learn at this rate?

  • Answer:

I agree with what JustMe said about spending a few hours at the rink. You are never too old to start skating. I am considering it myself. I've always wanted to do it my whole life. Basically all you need are the skates and lessons. It doesn't get expensive until you compete and want to be pro.

The justme! person is right. I just started taking lessons, I've always wanted to but my mom never had the money when I was a kid. Now that I'm in college I can... Kind of afford it xD I'm doing without a lot of stuff and it makes money a bit tight, but its worth it. Its a great escape from college. Its nice to stop working hard on classwork for a while and work hard on something more physical. I'm also visually impaired so I can't drive, so my skate time is really limited. I live close to home so my mom agreed to drive me twice a week (once for extra practice and once for the lesson+practice) I am taking group lessons and they aren't too bad. I had to buy some clothes suitable to skate because I literally had nothing but I splurged so the stuff should last a while. For getting rides, I mentioned my mom drives me. My hope is that by the time summer comes and I'll have the chance to go more I'll meet people there and do some networking. Carpooling is a great way to get places. Also check your public transit. The one closest to me is about an hour and a half bus ride away so if worse came to worse I could bus it. Definitely take the time and buy good skates. When I was in high school I bought a pair of ice skates on sale ($20) and, uh... They're okay but they bruise the back of my ankle every time I wear them. Seriously, you don't want that. Buy a nice pair that doesn't bruise yours ankle and fits properly.

At least you can reach one. I wouldn't mind learning how to figure skate, but there are no rinks in site at all, period. You can only ice skate when you travel to Florida. I'm sure you can drive to a rink at least a few times a month.

"IF" you are just starting-out figure skating, and have very-VERY little money to spend (especially regarding for kids),: 1. Look around, your area ro nearby, at various skating groups, clubs, etc.. 2. To start, seriosuly consider purchasing especially USED-SKATES; Do NOT buy skates at a department or discount-like store (They ususally have NO ankle support and can easily injure a young-NON-skating-person. Too many times, especially lady, figure skaters are asked to do more and more complicated and difficult skate moves and jumps at an extremely young age, only ruin thier bones at a later age, requiring surgery, and other hospitalization that ends a skating career all-too-early.). **Go to a GOOD local rink that actually has a "figure-skating" club, ...NOT just a skate club. DO-NOT rush into this skating thing. Personally go to NON-QUALIFYING skating competitions to see first-hand skating that many times is not on television (I first saw skaters like Emily Hughes, Kimmie Meisner, Rachael Flate, etc at local NON-QUALIFYING figure skating events around the Phidalelphia are long-before they became the nationally recognized skaters they are today.) More later "IF" wanted. CIAO
