How to prepare for a figure skating competition?

  • Answer:

The night before a competition, I pack everything I'll need and set out my warm-ups/dress for the next day. I still do some working out, but I decrease the intensity to decrease my chances of getting hurt. I go to bed fairly early (9-9:30). Before falling asleep, I envision performing my program(s) flawlessly in all events. In the morning I eat a healthy breakfast with lots of protein (Slim-Fast protein bar and fruit or yogurt). On the way to the rink, I listen to relaxing music (one of my favorites is "Pocketful of Sunshine") and my program music (but not too many time, because I don't want to over-think it) on my iPod. At the rink, I warm up/stretch and put on my skates. I try not to watch my competitors until after I have skated, because it makes me nervous.

ok i'm a canadian figure skater and i've been going to big competitions for 10 years now (i'm 17) and every year planning for a competition becomes more stressful and complicated. here's kind of what i'd say would be my way of planning for a competition: 2 weeks before the competition: -make sure that i have all of the required elements in my program and make sure that all of the jumps and spins are perfect and flawless. -sharpen my skates (you're probably thinking "you're sharpening your skates right before a competition? stupid girl!" but i skate 5 days a week so it's ok) 1 week before the competition: -practice 1 or 5 times at the rink where the competition is being held -figure out how i'm gonna do my hair and make up the day before the competition: -pack my skate bag, make up bag, hair bag, pack my dresses and tights, and all that other stuff that you take to a competition and on the day of the competition i don't do too much real work besides skating. about one hour before i go on the ice i do my hair and make up. when the flight before me has their warm up then i start to slowly slowly slowly put on my skates. hope this helped xoxox -tristin

What i do the day before if check my bag to see everything is in there then i get my blades sharpened then i practice my makeup then i finally i put my dress on my door hanger

the day before the competition, i picture in my head me doing my routine with everything very precise and perfect. this usually helps calm me down. on the day of the compeition, right before i go on the the ice, i do jump squats and tons of strecthing cuz it really helps to warm up the muscles. then all i do is i just say to myself, you've done this a million times, this is just a milion and one. :D it works for me.
