Can I have some tips for a double axel?

Tips for my axel....?

  • So I'm going to be starting my axel soon; right now I am working on my flip (mastered) loop (blah; not very consistent) and lutz (pretty good). My coach was going to put me on the ...show more

I've started working on them too, and I'll give you 2 main pieces of advice: 1. Like the answerer above said, don't think too much about it! Yes, you have to pay attention and control your body, but it's really easy to over-think the axel, and make it even harder than it already is. 2. Don't lean your body forward on the takeoff! This was a problem I had. I was trying to get more height (which I don't really need - I need better rotation), so when I was bending my knee on the takeoff, I was leaning forward with my upper body as well. This threw my whole jump off. My coach corrected it and told me to go in on a bent knee (not too bent), but to make my upper body as straight as I can. And guess what? I landed it! (I had to to a little hop to keep my balance, so I guess it doesn't actually count as landing it.....haha but it was a lot better!) But yeah it made the jump so much easier for me!

Yes, I have had my axel mastered now for about 2 months. Some tips i have for you is never give up and when you are going into the axel step straight and go through not around! You want to go into it straight and then jump thru like a waltz jump but then add the turn. Don't think so much about the jump just do it! Thats what i do and i am pretty succesful with it, and the harness really helps! I hope you succeed with your axel!

1 step is to never get discouraged because, the axel is actually the only jump where you take off forwards and the axel is a jump that frequently makes skaters quit so 1 DO NOT GIVE UP 2 axels come and go i have been doing mine for over a year and there are still bad days where i don't get them so don't be surprised when they don't work out -you should always go in the jump (all jumps actually) with confidence -always think positively because if you think negative you are underestimating yourself -jump in the air before you twist height before rotation -really pull in because it is not a single jump it is 1 and a half (well technically 1 and a quarter) -when you are really close think up, in, and out -practice rotation and landings off ice -NEVER give up and NEVER be discouraged

If your loop isn't consistent, you're not going to be able to land an axel. The checking out motion of a loop is exactly what you do for an axel. Waltz jumps also need to be really good. You need to be able to jump high into the air on them, and be able to use your arms properly. You should be able to do waltz jump-loop-loop combinations, and being able to do waltz jump-loop-loop-loop-loop-loop combinations like I could do before I ever started axels helps so much. Waltz jump back spins, axel walkthroughs, and tons of backspins and a loop to jump out of it will help. For now, you need to somewhat forget about landing your axel. You're not going to land it the first day you try it unless you're some freakishly talented skater like Johnny Weir. Which I doubt, because you wouldn't really be having problems with your other jumps. So for now, focus on the proper take-off and air position. That's the most important part with the harness anyways, since your coach is what helps you to stand up on the jump. When I learned my axel back 3 1/2 years ago, my coach didn't even allow me to try the jump for about 3 or 4 lessons. We would just spend about 10-20 minutes each lesson working on a correct walk-through so I understood the proper technique for an axel. Then I was allowed to start trying the whole jump. And it took me about 1 1/2 years (of skating about 2-3 hours per week) to land it (I didn't work on mine much though, I was competing a ton at that time and didn't really have tons of time between each competition to spend working on my axel). Anyways, just listen to what your coach tells you! He or she can give you many more tips from seeing you jump than we can give you tips for axels in general. Good luck with your axel!
