You can still learn. It's never to late to learn to skate! I just began skating last year at the age of 12. Most pros start at about 4 or 5. That's one thing about skating though: You don't have to take it seriously. Its okay if you still can't roller skate; you might have had an advantage if you did, though. Start out by going to an open skate or free skate. These are skate times that the rink allows anyone to come to. Either ask a friend who ice skates or look up on your city's website for the schedule. You will have to pay for skate rental (about $2 - $3) and admission ($4 - $6) See if a friend who skates can go with you to help. Start by marching across the ice or skating slowly along the wall, and make sure the skates are tied properly so you can balance. Keep going until you get the hang of it. Good luck and have fun!!

you dont need to roller blade. i never did. its similar but you ca nskate without having to know how to roller blade. you need to have confidence in yourself with everything you do. you'll learn how to ride a bike without trainers eventually...just try your best...thats what skating is really all about too. good luck, and please give figure skating a shot. its a lot of fun and will change your life forever

The reason for not knowing how to ride a bike may shed some light on this. If it is because you just haven't tried, no problem. If it is because you have a medical issue that prevents you from balancing, it is more of a problem. I know people who were over 30 when they first skated. I know people who have Meniere's Disease and a slight vertigo problem. Both had skated before these issues and the doctors have said that skating actually helps combat the effects of the problems. I will suggest borrowing a bike sometime from a friend who will not put you down for not having ridden one before and assist you. It is easy to do and will eliminate one minor thing that can create embarrassment. Since you are unsure of yourself, I would go to a roller rink first and try skating on quad skates (wheels arranged in a rectangle) since they are easier to stand up and start on. Once you are reasonably comfortable on them, changing to inlines or ice will be easy. The quick instructions to get started are: (This is written for a very basic beginner that may not have much balance skills. I don't know what your level is. You may progress through it very fast.) Start on carpet to get a feel of this without the skates rolling away, then move to the floor as you get comfortable. If you are really unsure of yourself have a friend lightly hold your hand for balance. Stand with your feet about shoulder width apart. Bend your knees and waist slightly so that your knees are above your toes and your face is above the knees. Lift your hands forward at elbow height. This is known as the ready position. It is similar to the ready position in most sports where people what to shift their balance easily in order to move. Tilt a toe outwards 30-45 degrees and step forward onto that foot. Repeat with the other foot. After doing this a few times, start sliding each foot forward as you step onto it. As you get better, tilt the feet out less and put your foot down more under your body. There are some animated lessons at http://lessons.rollerbladeusa.com/ The big differences between ice and the others is that you have a lot less grip between the blade and the ice than you do with the other skates and the floor. You need to not push quite as hard (not difficult for a beginner) when in your stride on the ice. You also want to keep the toes pointed out a little more on ice to get moving.
