Why do we feel more emotional watching a figure skating program than a gymnastics floor routine?

I love gymnastics too, but there is something sort of sterile in floor routines. Maybe it could be compared to a low-level compulsory program -- no music, half ice and lots of elements to cram into a very short time period. There really isn't a lot of emotion Incorporated into gymnastics and artistry seems to be less of a factor. In skating, we always talk -- maybe a little less now that judging has changed so drastically -- about an artistic vs. a technical skater and which outweighs the other. I think gymnastics focuses more on the technical because it is such a Technical sport -- there may not be room for more artistry. In skating, we are also actors. We try to "act" our music. If we skate to Phantom of the Opera, we don't plaster a light hearted smile on our face for the whole program because it's not a happy story. It's sad (I always liked the Phantom better than Raul for some reason), it's scary and very dramatic. I don't watch a lot of gymnastics, but most of the music they use is pretty safe. It all seems to be of one emotion. I don't think gymnasts have the time to be dramatic or to act the part. I think that's a point that unifies and separates the two sports. Maybe it's because I am a skater, but it seems like there is more freedom for chorography in skating. A gymnastic floor routine is pretty predictable, even for a non-gymnast. The rhythmic routines seem to emphasis a little more artistry, but it still doesn't compare to skating. :)

Right now in figure skating everybody does the same thing ever since the new judging system camein and if you dont think so then were have you been. Now you have to get level 3 to 4 spins i now have a bunch of hard spins like a death drop inside edge pancake to a foward sit fratiani they took a lot out of the sport i miss Micheal and Sasha.

Like you may be touched by the music. Plus the artistic moves.

I think that ice skating routines are more breathtaking. I know gymnastic routines are very amazing too but their routines seem much shorter and they don't really have time just to do choreography. Ice skaters also show more emotion with the music and more into their program. While gymnasts just run and tumble in my opinion. You can feel a skaters emotion while they skate but it is very hard to feel emotion while a gymnast tumbles.

Quite frankly (because I have expierience in both sports) most gymnast coaches are not too into the whole "feel the music and be drawn to it" thing, they are more business though its not like they want them to be mindless zombies. But then, I've met coaches in skating who have been all "doesn't matter, just skate" and thats just it, your not JUST skating and your not JUST doing gymnastics. In my opinion, it depends on the athlete. Some gymnasts such as Chelsie Memmel in my opinion, doesn't fee the music as much as she could. But then others, like Maddie Larson are all about the music! Then some skaters, Johnny Weir for example, can feel the music so much you want to get out there and join him, and then others, just can't. It depends on your connection to it. Thats why I personally think that skaters/gymnasts should really consider the music. Something they could be able to feel! You do better in whatever you do if you feel it more. Like you said, its more pleasurable to watch but some people don't get that. It's a natural born thing and I suppose some just don't have it. But you have to train it like you would a jump, the emotion, the tension, the drama, live it all! In the end, I don't think its a lack of gymnastics cheoreography, perhaps coaching stategies, or just the person in general. But how are we to know because we're not there. Its all opinion and how they touch us. And though I agree 100% that skaters do touch us more, I still think that its possible, just depends on the person. (Wow, sorry to ramble on like that!) Hope that was sufficient. Thanks and good question!

This is why it is more emotional for me. The music is more graceful and elegant then gymnastics. Figure skating is more artistic. If you have a love and passion for skating like I do, then you get deeper into the skating routine then you would a gymnastics routine. Some things you may not understand in gymnastics, but in figure skating u understand everything.
